For this project, I focused on the issue of unplanned pregnancy. I was inspired to research this topic when I discovered an organization called Pregnancy Solutions in my hometown, North Port, FL. They offer free and confidential services to women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. They offer continued support for expecting mothers and fathers throughout their entire pregnancy journey. This research project consists of two parts: an infographic and a design solution. For the first part, I researched the general topic of unplanned pregnancy in the United States. For the second part, I created a hypothetical design solution for Pregnancy Solutions.
Part 1
I researched unplanned pregnancy in the United States, collecting statistics and data. I designed an infographic poster to display my primary findings.

Part 2
I gathered information about the organization, Pregnancy Solutions, by interviewing the CEO and observing their social media pages. I discovered that their greatest issue was lack of consistent donations. To solve this issue, I created buttons for individuals who donate, a tote bag with a QR code, and a short video advertisement for social media.

Unplanned pregnancy affects many women in the United States. Women may feel like they are alone and lack confidence in their ability to take care of their child. My infographic will inform viewers of the statistics related to unplanned pregnancy and connect them to useful resources and support.
Inspiration
I gathered various examples of infographics to get inspiration for ways to visualize data. I looked for data that communicated serious topics such as climate change and domestic violence.

Mind Mapping
I created a mind map around the topic of “Women Experiencing Unplanned Pregnancy.” I expanded upon the main topic of unplanned pregnancy into four main categories that I planned to research: Parenting Classes, Support, Demographics, and Options (for pregnant women).

Secondary Research
The topics that I collected research on include:
-
Related Services
-
Parenting Classes
-
General Statistics
-
Effects on Women
-
Demographics
-
Federal and Local Resources/Support
I found that a majority of local services and online parenting classes come at some cost. If women are struggling financially, these resources may be inaccessible. Federal resources offer excellent support for pregnant women in need.
General research showed that 45% of all pregnancies are unplanned; 42% of unplanned pregnancies end in abortion and 58% end in birth. Of all states in the U.S., Mississippi has the highest percentage of unplanned pregnancies. In a study done by the Urban Institute, I found that a majority of women expected that an unplanned pregnancy would have a negative effect on their education, income, job, and mental health.

Design Solution
Challenge:
In my interview with the CEO of Pregnancy Solutions, I identified that the greatest challenge facing their organization is lack of consistent monetary donations. Pregnancy Solutions offers free services to their clients, which means that donations are imperative.

Response:
In an effort to help Pregnancy Solutions get more consistent donations, I created an animated video for their social media page that informs viewers about the organization and encourages them to donate. In addition to the animation, I created a tote bag and two button designs to increase real-world exposure. These physical solutions also act as a means to raise money with customers’ purchase of these items.
Mood Board
I collected playful, simple icon inspiration as well as elements of their branding. I looked at Pregnancy Solutions's website and pulled images such as logos, colors, and icons.

Observation
For my observation, I analyzed Pregnancy Solutions’ Facebook page. My goal in this observation was to see who the organization follows, what content they repost, what content they create, the events they promote, and how their followers interact with the page.

I found that they follow local organizations and nonprofits, and they repost content related to the community. For example, they reposted a post by Sarasota County Government that gives information about registering for SNAP. Additionally, their personal content contains information about hours, upcoming events, and pregnancy. At the time of my observation, they were enduring the effects of hurricane Ian, so they posted updates about hours of operation, product distribution, and disaster relief. I concluded that people interacted most with their personal content such as videos and announcements about upcoming events. For example, a video of the CEO talking about reopening their facilities after hurricane Ian had 176 views, 7 shares, and 8 likes.

Interview
I interviewed the CEO and Executive Director of Pregnancy Solutions, Jacqueline Zdrojowy. My goal with this interview was to learn about their greatest issues and needs as an organization.
